The department of biochemistry was founded in 1987. We currently have 14 academic staff, around 80 undergraduate students, and 20 postgraduate students. Throughout 20 years, the department has gradually improved in terms of research and teaching. The undergraduate teaching program is now also changing and expanding. We continue to develop and improve our contributions to our students. Our M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs have also been radically improved. We have a careful monitoring of progress, and we offer more opportunities for both specialized training and learning transferable skills. Whatever our achievement in Biochemistry and in making it useful, our most important contribution will surely be the young graduates and postgraduates who go on to play in many aspects of scientific research, industry, government and teaching.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the leading academic and scientific departments in Thailand. The department was founded in 1966, initially with only an undergraduate programs. Graduate studies were established with a master program in 1981 and a doctoral program in 1998. The department instills its students with a solid foundation in the science of chemistry and actively encourages them to extend their studies into other disciplines and fields of science. The faculty members are involved in frontier research concerning modern organic synthesis, chemistry of natural products, development of computational methodologies and applications of quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics and dynamics methods to materials science and biological system, physical chemistry of nanostructured materials, analytical method development, chemistry of gem identification, polymer and petroleum chemistry. The center of nanotechnology has been recently established and is centered at the department. It is sponsored by NSTDA as a Center of Excellence in nanotechnology.

Currently, the department is made up to 51 full-time faculty members and 23 supporting staff. All current academic staff have active research programs and publish their findings in a timely manner and have funding supports from Kasetsart University Research and Development Institute (KURDI), the Thailand Research Fund (TRF), National Research Council of Thailand, National Science and Technology Development Agency, the Royal Golden Jubilee Ph.D. program, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, industries, and other sources. In addiction to its full-time faculty members, the department is also home to several adjunct professors, and post-doctoral fellows. As a reflection of the outstanding research and development being carried out in the department, many of the faculty members have received numerous awards and other distinctions, including the Thailand's Outstanding Scientist Awards, Distinguished Researcher of Thailand Awards in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences from the National Research Council of Thailand, Promising young Scientist Research Award from the Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Technology, TRF Senior Research Scholar from the Thailand Research Foundation, Humboldt Research Scholar from the Alexander von Humblot Foundation, TWAS for Young Scientist in Thailand, L'Oreal for Women in Science and others.

There are currently about 240 undergraduate students enrolled in the department, with an additional 160 graduate students. In addiction to their regular course-work, undergraduates are actively encouraged to carry out research activities with a faculty members. Local and international workshops, seminars, and extensive research collaborations provide good opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students alike to present their research work, enrich their education, and keep abreast of developments in various fields of chemistry. Most of our undergraduates continue on undertaking graduate work in an array of fields of interest after completion of their undergraduate program. Graduates of our graduate program, many can be found as faculty members in other renowned universities and colleges as well as in industry where they occupy of important positions.

The key features of our present success and of our future strategy are:

the development of fundamental understanding, with the emphasis on new structural, synthetic, analytical and theoretical techniques applicable in both academic and industrial contexts;

recruitment of the highest quality academic staff and the best PhD students, encouraging all to develop independent research groups with the freedom to associate with other groups;

the pursuit of interdisciplinary collaborations, with others departments in the University, and with external industrial and academic institutions;

Since 2000, in order to meet this goal, the department has been supported by the postgraduate education and research in chemistry and in petroleum and petrochemical technology initiated by the ministry of education for modernizing and extending its research laboratories.

In 1967, computer course were first offered under the Department of Mathematics and the students could officially receive B.Sc. degrees in computer science in 1987. In 1992, the department was established. Our aim is to produce a challenging bachelor's degree program in computer science. The B.Sc. program not only provides an intensive study in these areas, but also focuses on the development of the ability to integrate and apply the knowledge to the solution of important real-world problems. The department also offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science. The M.Sc. program involves in the in-depth study of various areas of computer technology and research contribution to the fields. The program provides intensive preparation in concepts and techniques related to the design, programming, and application of computing systems. These days, our graduates are in demand by the growing field of computer industry. Our program is recognized for producing skillful and well-rounded programmers. There are 17 full-time academic staff.

The Department of Earth Sciences has been changed from the Department of General Science established in 1989 fommerly responsible for teaching B.Sc. (General Science) and contained two B.Sc. curricula namely General Science and Earth Science, M.Sc. (Cell and Molecular) and Ph.D. (Bioscience). The department has been reengineered to focus on Earth Sciences and there will be two more graduate curricula, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Earth Science and Technology expected to start from 2007. We are teaching and doing integrated research topics dealing with atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and geosphere, and their interactions including relationships and impacts by nature and human activities, which are the causes of disasters. Besides intensive teaching and field work, collaborative researches with both national and international institutions have been conducted.

The Department of Mathematics was officially founded in 1966. Prior to this, there was a group of instructors in the unit providing mathematics instruction for university students requiring certain mathematical backgrounds. Since 1969, the department has offered a B.Sc. degree in mathematics. The M.Sc. degree in mathematics was later offered in 1986. Currently, the partment has 26 academic staff members, and around 120 undergraduate students and up to 10 graduate students. The vision of our department is to be a leader in mathematics teaching and research within the Southeast Asian. The mission of the department of mathematics is to (1) provide quality instruction in mathematics for students; (2) pursue quality research in mathematics both in theory and applications; and (3) provide mathematical services to the society at large.

The undergraduate degree program in mathematics provides students with broad, general mathematics instruction covering almost all branches of mathematics. The program serves to prepare students for future careers in private and government sectors. Recently, the department has initiated a service called Mathematics Clinic for undergraduate students in need for mathematics tutorials and/or guidance. The Bachelor degree Program usually takes four years of study.

The Master Degree Program consists of two parts. In the first (instructional) part, students are required to take certain compulsory courses while in the second (independent work) part, students choose either to work on a thesis or on an in-depth study of topic(s) in mathematics at the consent of the advisor. The Master Program usually takes two years of study.

Since the establishment of Kasetsart University in 1943, teaching elementary science subjects in each faculty is the responsibility of their own. Each faculty had their own basic science divisions e.g. Division of Chemistry, Division of Biology and Division of Mathematics but Division of Physics had not been established yet until 1952. In 1952 Kasetsart University sighed a contract with Oregon State University for an agreement to receive supports from the United States in basic science education. There were several experts sent from the USA to help us developing our basic science education. Since then Physics education at Kasetsart University had started.

The first physics class was given by the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Science. In 1996 Faculty of Science and Arts was founded. Division of Physics was part of the Faculty with Archarn Witoon Hongsumarn as the first director of the division. Later on the Division of Physics was given the name as the Department of Physics to comply with the international standard. In 1972, the first 3 students graduated from us with the degree of Bachelor of Science (Physics). And in 1990, graduate program in Physics has been established with the degree of Master of Science (Physics) given. Currently we offered B.Sc. (physics), M.Sc. (physics) and M.Sc. (Metrology).
